Wood Nailer ES-1 FAQ

We recently hosted a virtual session of “Perimeter Edge Metal Wind Design Seminar: Understanding ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1," and received several inquires about the testing standard specific to wood nailers. Please find below some of the Q&A from the presentation. 


Q: Where is the requirement for the wood nailer attachment listed?   

A: Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Bulletin 1-49 (Perimeter Flashing) provides guidance for wood nailers in section 2.2.2. ANSI/SPRI ED-1 (Design Standard for Edge Systems Used with Low Slope Roofing Systems) also addresses the wood nailer in section 3.8 under nailer system requirements. Wood nailers are not directly addressed in ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1.   
 

Q: Is wood nailer required in all coping installations?   

A: No, a wood nailer is not required for coping installations. It can be installed directly on to wood, metal, and masonry.  
 

Q: What happens if we install a manufactured coping to manufactured specs and the nailer is not installed to wind uplift requirements by the framing guys?   

A: The wood nailer is a critical part of the building termination. There are guidelines on not only the selection of the type and size of the nailer, but also fastening type and spacing based on the wind map. Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-49 contains options for fasteners and spacing. If a wood nailer is not properly designed or installed, it could be a source of failure.  
 

Q: Does FM data break down the edge damage between nailer failure and metal failure?   

A: FM does not distinguish between the two types of failures when investigating claims in the field. This is the same for other insurance companies, non-profit organizations such as RICOWI, and manufacturers when investigating warranty claims in the field.
 

Q: How do you handle a situation where the substrate is different from the substrate used for product testing?   

A: ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 testing is done on a wood nailer, but a separate pull-out test is done for fasteners to confirm the fasteners used on other substrates have equal or better pull-out ratings and the product can be used on other substrates.
